No luck so far.. it¹s only on one server (and the only VM we use)

root at us1 admin]# /sbin/service proftpd start
Starting proftpd:                                          [FAILED]
[root at us1 admin]# /sbin/service xinetd restart
Stopping xinetd:                                           [  OK  ]
Starting xinetd:                                           [  OK  ]

But no connection possible.

Not urgent, I¹m sure one of these days it will work :)

That should not be the case. Make sure Proftpd is run via xinetd and not
stand alone:

/sbin/service proftpd stop
/sbin/service xinetd restart
