I'd seen these sort of error messages *long before* the updates.  I always
assumed it was some sort of artifact of the system monitoring/prodding
that sausalito does periodically to check various server status
conditions.  At the time, there didn't seem to be any operational issue
other than lots of extra log entries.

But at that time, FTP otherwise seemed to work and at the time there
wasn't the number of eyes watching for odd behavior that we have now. :)
