I had compiled a version of bind 9 that stored binary...very annoying, but 
maybe it was done as some 'security' measure.

After recent BX updates, that version was wiped, and the new one is 
traditional text.

I suspect, but have not verified, that the storage format may be a compile 
time option.  At least I'd *hope* so.
