Michael,

it is not a technical issue it is more a visual issue for the customer.
Yes of course also the address <username>@<FQDN> is working.

However the customer also want to communicate his official address even if the vacation function is answering the message.

Maybe for the todolist/roadmap: Just add an additional pulldown with all Username, Aliasnames @ FQDN and all e-mail aliases combinations which are allowed. Now the user can select the sender address he want to have.
