In case someone may be looking at this in the archive, or is just
curious, here is what we found:

In this instance, the DNS was hosted on 3rd party servers, and not on
the BlueOnyx server. In these cases, it is best practice to ensure that
there are no DNS records for the domain on the BlueOnyx server that
would cause confusion.

The easiest way to do this is to go to Site Management for the vsite in
question > Services > DNS and then click Remove Records. That will
delete the entire DNS zone from the BlueOnyx server.

That would most likely have solved this issue on its own. Remember
that when you see "excessive recursion (max 50), ruleset canonify" on a
BlueOnyx server, the problem will almost always be solved by fixing DNS.

The other issue we noted is that the website is hosted on a different
(Windows) server, but the vsite on the server carried the "www"
hostname. For clarity, we changed "www" on the vsite's hostname to
"mail" on the BlueOnyx server. This would not have directly impacted
the issue, since the vsite was correctly configured with the domain (no
hostname) in email server aliases. But we do find it a good idea as
having this clarified can help speed troubleshooting by keeping things
straight.
