Thanks Stefan, tired this to no avail.

I found the solution (for anyone as daft as me).
I had a problem with customers using the same POP3 email account and both
downloading the same message.
So I put the mailbox lock on yesterday (vi /etc/dovecot.conf -Locate the
line: "#pop3_lock_session = no"  -Change to read: "pop3_lock_session =
yes").
When I backed out of this (today), I forgot the "mbox.lock" files were still
on almost all the users accounts:
"rm /home/.sites/XX/siteXX/.users/XX/USERNAME/mbox.lock"
Then I resarted sendmail and it all flooded in from /var/spool/mqueue.
What a waste of 6 good hours.
