Maybe your Sendmail was not set to require or even try TLS - but was changed in the update.  You might look into that.

And that's one of the reasons I so turn off automatic updates and closely control updates.  If a package requires a update for security reasons, I take some steps to make a copy of what is presently there (in case something breaks and I have to go back).  Then I'll allow the update of that specific package.  Otherwise, I just don't update.
