The typical procedure for using the BlueOnyx OS template on OpenVZ is this:

1.) Deploy the VPS using the OS template.

2.) Set password for user "admin" and "root" to "blueonyx". Just setting
it for one of them is not sufficient.

3.) When the VPS has started, point your browser to the main IP of the
VPS. Click on the "start" button and finish the web based setup. In the
web based setup you can then set the "admin" password to something else.
This will also reset the "root" password to the same as the new "admin"
password.

Once that is done, you can SSH into the VPS. Likewise, you can of course
use "vzctl enter <vpsid>" at any time to jump from the OpenVZ master
node into the BlueOnyx VPS, which requires no further authentication for
doing so.

No, BlueOnyx uses /etc/shadow. The problem is probably that you just set
the "root" password and not the "admin" password, too.
