Some further information. It does look like the php modules are being
loaded:

# apachectl -t -D DUMP_MODULES | grep php

Syntax OK
 php5_module (shared)
 suphp_module (shared)

Also, last night I installed rar/unrar as per this page:

http://idroot.net/tutorials/install-rarunrar-centos/

In case that's messed anything up, I've removed the added rpmforge-release
repo.
