Hello,

if I try to fetch mails with pop3 without TLS (plain) then I will be always requested for the password and in the /var/log/maillog I see

Feb 24 07:23:15 localhost dovecot: pop3-login: Disconnected (tried to use disallowed plaintext auth): user=<>, rip=1.2.3.4, lip=4.3.2.1, session=<6+g/ldQPQwDVxlvV>

I checked the dovecot conf

10-auth.conf
disable_plaintext_auth = no
auth_mechanisms = plain login

this seems to be ok, but

10-ssl.conf
ssl = required

I think this prevents the system from plain logins.
I changed to

ssl = yes

And now I can login with PLAIN and with SSL/TLS.

@Michael: I think always SSL/TLS would be good but not every user is using it. So I think this should be yes and not required.

Best regards,
Dirk
