[BlueOnyx:17942] pop3-login failure

Days away from server upgrade, problems with the old one...

I can't receive email anymore. After resetting my password I get this 
error in /var/log/maillog:

dovecot: pop3-login: Disconnected (auth failed, 2 attempts in 12 secs)

This is on a BlueOnyx 5106R Series server and the problems started after 
I added another Virtual Site. While adding that site I may have used 
some problematic characters in passwords like ampersands. I have since 
deleted the Virtual Site but the problems persist. Other users that did 
not change their passwords can still send and receive email.

Using telnet I get this:

+OK Dovecot ready.
    (anything I enter here results in the next line)
-ERR Unknown command.
user (valid username)
+OK
pass (valid password)
+OK Logged in.
stat
+OK 8 222636


Any ideas?
