Ah, checksum errors on the tarball(s). That would explain it. In that
case it barfs as well. Also: when you do the next export on the source
server: Crank the quota for this Vsite up all the way. For the site
itself. And then for this user, too.

To check how much he's really using, do this:

cd ~jmaldonado
du -h

That shows how many diskspace he's using within his home directory.
