Thanks Chris...
None of those  restrictions are in place - I successfully used RC yesterday
and had been using it for years.
But good news...a few minutes ago it started working again. I didn't do
anything other than wait an hour or so.

It sounds like an authentication error.   Since Roundcube makes an IMAP 
connection from localhost, I would check to see if you've got any firewall /
security (ie: apf, Dfix) that have flagged 127.0.0.1 or the server's main
public IP address.
