Looks like you forgot a directory in the path. 

The error shows it trying to open a file in a directory that I bet isn't there.  
It says "/home/.sites/28/site1/tmp/com_updater(2).tgz".  
Shouldn't that be "/home/.sites/28/site1/web/tmp/com_updater(2).tgz"??

Did you accidentally put that path into the Joomla set up without the "web" directory?  Or is it wrong in the /home/.sites/28/site1/web/configuration.php file??

Yep - I bet its the variable "$tmp_path" in the configuration.php file.  Fix that by adding web/, and I bet it works OK.
