Actually I don't see it that way. The only difference I see is that they throw
in a few (optional) RPMs which aren't part of RHEL. Aside from that they do
the same what CentOS does: They take the RedHat SRPMs, remove the branding and
rebuild RPMs/SRPMs off 'em for release.
And yes, they do it faster than CentOS. But no worse. CentOS seems to suffer
from the "cool, someone else does it" or the "work by comitee" desease, while
SL can afford to have a small, but dedicated and paid team at work to get the
job done in a much shorter time. With CERN and Fermilabs doing it, that's
basically our tax money at work there. Which is kind of cool and gives me an
almost perverse sense of joy using it. After all, who would have thought
they'd do something *that* useful with our tax money? :o)
As far as compatibility goes: Everything that I compiled on RHEL6 beta 2 did
run just fine on SL6.0 without recompiling. If that ain't bit-compatible, then
I don't know.

I would also love to use CentOS6. But like said: An OS with six months worth
of unpatched security holes in it is worthless and outright dangerous. So for
now SL6 will be the testbed for 5107R and when CentOS eventually catches up,
there will be a 5107R for it as well. In the end there will only be two (OS
related) RPMs different between the two boxes and the rest is (more or less)
the same, provided that both CentOS6 and SL6 would ever be at the same
patchlevel with the release of system updates. Which they probably never will
be.
