I'm not sure if Amazon solved the issues Dave is talking about, but their
provisioned IOPS (
http://aws.amazon.com/about-aws/whats-new/2013/03/13/amazon-rds-3tb-30k-iops/)
works great with Linux systems in the elastic compute environment and is
reeeeeally fast!  (And pricey--but worth it!)

Of course, it may be an apples/oranges comparison (standalone server vs
cloud infrastructure) but thought it was worth mentioning.
