That any many other things, yes.

I don't know, but it really feels like they put the BOFH (bastard
operator from hell) is in charge of PHP development. The sole purpose of
major releases now seems to be: "How can we upset the most people with
the least effort?" and all subsequent minor releases are bugfixes for
the things they broke while screwing us over.

In PHP-5.5 Zend Optimizer is now included in the baseline, which means
it'll probably crash Apache more often or will be incompatible with
itself anyway.

I'm in the process of rolling up PHP-5.5.0 PKGs at the moment, but as of
now I'd rather suggest to stay clear of using those. There will probably
a furry of bugfixes to the PHP-5.5 line in the next weeks and months.
