Thanks Chris,
I did this trying to fix the email alias problem:
service sendmail stop
service dovecot stop
killall -9 sendmail
killall -9 dovecot-auth
killall -9 pop3-login
service dbrecover stop
service auditd restart
service dbrecover start
service saslauthd restart
service dovecot start
service sendmail start

then rebooted
That seemed to clear up on its own in about a hour.. weird..
Still have the adding and removal of user email alias User unknown problem..
