If it stops like that during boot, it means the file system has errors, 
and it can't fix them automatically.   You need to enter the root 
password, and then run 'fsck' manually on the disk.  It will probably spit 
ut errors telling what it found, and say 'fix?'.  Answering yes lets it do 
its best.  Generally, once you get done, it will work ok, but there's some 
chance there's some data corruption...which is why you need to do a backup 
while things are still working.
