I agree with Gerald - don't use up half a tank of fuel on the trip until 
you know the box is running properly.

/root/network_settings.sh should work just fine.  Are you certain that 
you've got good values in there?  Anything odd going on in 
/var/log/messages?

Did you try rebooting the box, then giving an IP change?
