That is a good question. Maybe the config directory is corrupted?

When you run "mc" as root, it creates a directory at /root/.mc/ to store
your settings and history. Each user that has used "mc" at least once
has such a ".mc" directory in his home directory.

You could delete those directories and could start "mc" again to see if
that makes any difference. On first start it will create a fresh ".mc"
directory again.
